Overview

A complete solar pond filter kit with everything you need to keep small to medium ponds clear – no mains electricity, no running costs. The 20-litre filter bucket houses the pump inside, drawing water through the filter media and pumping it back out as a fountain or through tubing. Add the optional UV clarifier to kill green algae for even clearer water.

✓ Complete Kit – Ready to Go ✓ 20 Litre Filter Bucket ✓ 700 LPH Solar Pump ✓ Zero Running Costs ✓ Optional UV Clarifier

Unlike smaller 6.5L or 10L filter boxes, this 20-litre bucket gives the pump room to breathe and provides three times the filtration volume. The larger surface area means less frequent cleaning and better water quality, especially in ponds with fish.

How the Kit Works

Filtration

The solar pump sits inside the 20-litre filter bucket, surrounded by filter media. As the pump draws water in, it passes through the filter pads and media bags – trapping debris, sediment and biological waste before the water reaches the pump.

  • 20L bucket – 3x the volume of standard eco filters
  • Filter pads for mechanical filtration
  • 2 mesh bags for biological media (zeolite, bio-balls etc.)
  • Pump protected from debris inside the bucket

Solar Power

The 12W solar panel powers the pump directly – no batteries needed for basic operation. Position the panel in a sunny spot and the pump runs automatically during daylight hours.

  • 12W solar panel with ground spike
  • 700 LPH flow rate
  • Up to 1.2m spray height for fountain displays
  • 5m cable between panel and pump
  • Multiple fountain heads included

Optional: Add UV Clarification

Green water is caused by microscopic algae that mechanical filtration alone cannot remove. Adding the optional 5W UV clarifier kills green algae, bacteria and viruses as water flows through – clearing green water at the source.

  • 5W LED UVC clarifier connects inline on the pump outlet
  • Water flows: pond → through filter bucket → pump → UV clarifier → back to pond
  • Kills green algae, harmful bacteria and viruses
  • Results typically visible within 1–2 weeks
  • Requires a 12V battery backup to power the UV lamp (sold separately)

How UV Connects to This Kit

  • Instead of a fountain head, connect tubing to the pump outlet
  • Run tubing from pump to one barb on the UV clarifier
  • Second barb returns water to the pond
  • UV power cable plugs into the light output on a 12V battery box
  • Battery box connects to the solar panel

Pond Suitability

Recommended Pond Size

  • Up to 1,500 litres without fish

How to Set Up Your Solar Pond Filter Kit

Simple assembly – no tools, no wiring. Set up in minutes.

1. Prepare the Bucket

  • Place the pump in the centre of the 20L bucket
  • Fill the two mesh bags with your chosen biological media
  • Place the filled mesh bags around the pump
  • Lay the filter pads on top

2. Fit the Lid

  • Thread the pump cable and fountain tube through the lid openings
  • Clip the two-piece lid securely onto the bucket
  • Attach your chosen fountain head or connect tubing

3. Position in Pond

  • Submerge the filter bucket in the pond
  • Place on a flat area – gravel, shelf, or pond floor
  • Pond depth must exceed the height of the bucket (18.5cm)
  • Position where water circulation will be most effective

4. Connect Solar Panel

  • Push the ground spike into lawn or soft ground
  • Angle the panel towards the sun (south-facing)
  • Connect the 5m cable to the pump
  • The pump will start automatically in sunlight

5. Optional: Add UV Clarifier

  • Connect tubing from pump outlet to UV clarifier inlet
  • Connect UV clarifier outlet back to pond (or to a fountain)
  • Plug UV power cable into 12V battery box light output
  • UV requires a battery backup system (sold separately)

6. Biological Settling Period

  • Beneficial bacteria take 4–6 weeks to colonise the media
  • Water may appear slightly cloudy initially – this is normal
  • Avoid cleaning the media during this settling period
  • Once established, the biological filter breaks down fish waste continuously

How Your Solar Pond Filter Kit Works

The pump sits inside the filter bucket, drawing water through the filter media before pumping it back to the pond as a fountain or through tubing.

Step 1: Water Drawn In

  • Pond water enters the filter bucket through gaps in the lid
  • Water passes through filter pads (mechanical filtration)
  • Then through mesh bags with biological media
  • Debris, sediment and waste are trapped before reaching the pump

Step 2: Clean Water Out

  • Filtered water is pumped out at 700 LPH
  • Choose fountain display (up to 1.2m spray height)
  • Or connect tubing for a waterfall or stream
  • If UV added: water passes through the inline clarifier before returning to pond

Solar Power

  • 12W panel converts sunlight directly to pump power
  • No batteries needed for basic operation
  • Pump runs automatically during daylight hours
  • Position panel in the sunniest spot available

Maintenance

  • Lift bucket from pond and remove lid
  • Rinse filter pads in a bucket of pond water (not tap water)
  • Rinse or replace media bags as needed
  • Clean pump intake if flow reduces
  • Clean solar panel monthly for best performance
