Frequently Asked Questions

Do solar path lights work in autumn and winter?
Yes. Models designed for year-round use, particularly those with motion sensors, perform more reliably during shorter winter days.
How far apart should I space them?
Many users space path lights around 2–4 metres apart, depending on brightness and layout.
Are they suitable for driveways?
They are designed mainly for guidance and visibility, marking an edge rather than flooding it with light. For higher output, other solar lighting types may be more suitable.
What maintenance is required?
Very little. Keeping the solar panel clean and unobstructed helps maintain reliable charging.
Are they actually any good?
Yes, when they are chosen for the job and the season. A good one has a panel that gets direct sun for five hours or more a day, a replaceable battery and a sealed, weatherproof body, and most of ours are rated IP65 or better. It runs from dusk for several hours after a sunny day in spring and summer. In winter the sun is low and the useful hours are few, so expect shorter running or none on dull days; a hybrid solar and USB model, or a tiltable panel that faces the low winter sun, keeps a path lit for longer.
How long do they stay on at night?
After a full day of direct summer sun, most of our range is rated to run for around 8 to 12 hours, which covers the night from dusk. Running time follows the charge the panel took in that day, so a cloudy day or a shaded panel means a shorter night, and from late autumn the low sun cuts it further. Motion-sensor models save their charge by staying dim until someone walks past, so they last longer per charge than an always-on light.
