Overview
Long-lasting solar string lights: 100 LEDs on a 10 m clear wire, in warm white or cool white, powered by a separate solar panel unit with a 4000mAh battery rated for at least 50 hours from a full charge. Built for Christmas and the winter months: it switches itself on at dusk, the big battery stores more of each short day's sun, and during long spells of heavy overcast weather you can top it up from any USB phone charger with the cable in the box.
100 LEDs about 10 cm apart: warm white (3000K) or cool white (6000K)
10 m of lights plus a 2.5 m lead to the panel unit
2W solar panel on a ground spike or wall bracket
Rechargeable 3.7V 4000mAh lithium-ion battery
USB backup charging: about 3 hours from flat at 1A
Lights dim gradually as the battery runs down, rather than cutting out
Simple on/off, no modes to fiddle with
Designed for winter; for spring and summer the Sterling 200 is the better buy
The Sterling 100 is our long-lasting string set: a 10 m run of small lights that looks after itself, in a choice of warm white or cool white. Its 4000mAh battery is rated by the maker for at least 50 hours from a full charge, and a USB port lets you top it up when the sun can't. The 100 LEDs sit about 10 cm apart on a thin clear wire, enough to line a run of fence panels, a pergola beam, a balcony rail or the trunk of a tree without a plug in sight. The solar panel unit is separate: put it where the sun is, on its ground spike or wall bracket, and run the 2.5 m lead to the start of the string.

What sets this set apart is the battery and the USB port. A 3.7V 4000mAh lithium-ion battery sits in the panel unit, and a covered charging port beside the light socket lets you fill it from any USB or mobile phone charger, using the cable in the box. It is designed for Christmas and the winter months: the large battery holds more of each short day's charge, and if a long run of heavy overcast days leaves it low, a three-hour top-up from a phone charger gets the lights back on. As the battery runs down the lights dim gradually rather than switching off without warning.
Designed for winter: the Sterling 100 is our Christmas and winter string set. Keep the panel facing the midday sun with nothing shading it, and use the USB top-up during long spells of heavy overcast weather. Buying for spring and summer? The Sterling 200 is the better choice: long summer days don't need such a big battery.
Where to Fit It
The string looks best supported along a line. Clip or tie it every three or four lights so it runs straight rather than sagging between fixings.
Fences and walls
Along the top rail or coping
10 m of lights for a short fence run or one side of a patio
Panel in the border below on its spike
Pergolas, arbours and rails
Along a beam or handrail
Balcony railings: spike the panel in a large pot
Decking balustrades and gazebos
Trees and shrubs
Wrap a trunk in an even spiral
The bark supports the wire
Keep the panel out in the open, within 2.5 m
The Solar Panel Unit
The 2W panel, the battery and the controls share one unit. Push the spike into a border or lawn edge, or screw the bracket to a wall or fence post, and angle the panel towards the midday sun with nothing shading it. The string plugs into the LIGHT port with a screw cap that keeps the water out. A small SYSTEM light on the unit shows what it is doing: green when the string is lit, yellow while it charges, red when the battery is flat.

Good to Know
Solar lights need direct sunlight: aim for five hours or more a day on the panel. Short, dull days put less charge in, which is why this set has a large battery and a USB top-up for long overcast spells. Unplug the string before you charge from USB. There is one control, the on/off switch on the back of the unit: no modes, no remote, no dimmer. The panel keeps charging the battery even while the switch is off.
Common Questions
Can I charge the battery from the mains?
Yes. Unplug the light string, lift the protective cap on the charging port and connect any USB or mobile phone charger (4.5–5V, under 3A) with the USB cable in the box. A flat battery takes about three hours at 1A. Plug the string back into the LIGHT port when it has finished.
Will it work in winter?
Yes: that is exactly what it is built for. The 4000mAh battery is rated by the maker for at least 50 hours of light from one full charge, so a few dark, grey days in a row won't leave you without lights, and the panel keeps adding charge from whatever daylight there is. Face it to the midday sun with nothing shading it. If a long run of heavy overcast weather does drain the battery, a three-hour USB top-up from any phone charger, with the cable in the box, gets the lights straight back on.
Warm white or cool white – what is the difference?
Warm white is 3000K, a soft candle-coloured glow that suits patios and planting. Cool white is 6000K, a crisp bright white that looks modern against grey fences, rendered walls and evergreens.
How long is the string?
There are 10 m of lights with the LEDs about 10 cm apart, plus a 2.5 m lead from the first light back to the panel unit, so the panel can sit up to 2.5 m from where the lights start.
Why don't the lights come on at night?
The panel is also the dusk sensor. If a porch light, security light or street lamp shines on it, it thinks it is still daytime. Move the panel unit away from artificial light, and check the switch on the back is set to On.
Quick, flexible installation: spike the panel unit in a border or fix it to a wall or fence with the bracket, within 2.5 m of where the string starts. Angle the panel to the midday sun, connect the string to the LIGHT port and tighten the screw cap, then switch the unit On. Run the string along your fence, rail or beam, clipping it every three or four lights. Keep the panel away from porch and street lights, and give it a full day of sun (or a USB charge) before judging running time.
String Installation & Care Guide
Your new lighting system uses extremely fine copper wiring to transport low-voltage electricity efficiently. While this technology enables beautiful, eco-friendly illumination, it requires careful handling and specific installation methods to ensure longevity. Understanding these requirements will help you enjoy your lights for many years to come.
1. Panel Mounting Options
Ground spike for soft surfaces
Wall bracket for fences/walls
Shelf stand for windowsills (If Applicable)
2. Optimal Positioning
Choose a south-facing location
Avoid shaded areas during the day
Ensure direct sunlight access for charging
At night, keep the panel/sensor in a genuinely dark spot – avoid nearby windows, security lights or street lamps
3. Light String Support
Support every 2-3 LEDs (avoid spans over 4-5)
What to use: small cable clips or U-hooks (similar to the small clips used for telephone cable) — they hold the wire securely without squeezing or pinching it
Cable ties are fine if left loose — never tightened to the point of compressing the wire
Avoid: wrapping the string around a screw, or splitting the strands and routing them either side of a screw head — both methods damage the fine internal wires and lead to failure over time
4. Power Settings
Switch on for initial setup
Charges in both ON/OFF positions
Auto-activation at dusk using the built-in light sensor
If the panel or sensor is close to other light sources, the lights may not switch on at all
Installation Methods
Choose the best mounting option for your location. Proper installation is crucial for the longevity and performance of your lighting system.
Ground Installation
Soften hard ground with water
Insert spike securely
Attach power unit
Wall Mounting
Use screws and wall plugs
Secure bracket firmly
Click panel into place
Windowsill Setup (where applicable)
Use provided stand

Think of it like securing a delicate necklace
Rule: Support every 2-3 LEDs, with clips that grip without crushing
Water & Weather Protection
Avoid areas with concentrated water flow (e.g., from roofs without gutters)
Waterfalls can wear away protective coating over time
Do not submerge LEDs or place where water pools (unless rated IP65+)
The Conifer Challenge
Requires extra support due to annual pruning and wind movement
Branches can whip around vigorously during storms
Tip: Create a secure pathway, don't just drape
Always remove lights before pruning
Wildlife Interactions
Birds are attracted to small, bright objects resembling berries
Curious beaks can damage LED bulbs
Solution: Avoid strategic placement near bird feeders or heavy bird traffic areas
Moving, Storage & Long-Term Care
The delicate copper wiring requires special care when not in use. Proper handling prevents damage and extends the life of your lights significantly.
