Solar fairy lights and solar string lights for gardens, patios, pergolas, fences and trees. Solar panels charge the lights during daylight for use after dark. Running time depends on the sunlight received, the season and the model. For winter displays, consider a set with USB charging so you can top up the battery when daylight is limited.

Outdoor Use and Winter Charging

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do they stay on at night?
Running time depends on the model, lighting mode and charge received. Short winter days and shade can reduce it. Check the product page for the stated running time and whether USB charging is available.
Are they suitable for UK weather?
Yes. They're designed for outdoor UK conditions, with weather-resistant construction and charging systems suited to variable daylight.
Do they require wiring or professional installation?
No wiring is required. Most sets install in minutes using hooks, clips, or ties.
How can I improve winter performance?
Position the solar panel for maximum daylight exposure, keep it clean, and consider models with hybrid or USB backup options.
What's the difference between solar fairy lights and solar string lights?
The terms are used interchangeably — both describe strings of small LEDs on a flexible cable, solar-powered and designed for outdoor decorative use. Fairy lights tends to emphasise delicate, closely-spaced LEDs often on fine copper wire, suited to a subtle magical look. String lights is the broader term that can include larger-bulb festoon styles. For classic Pinterest-style garden ambience, choose finer fairy strings. For party and patio statement lighting, solar festoon lights are the right call.
Will they work for Christmas displays?
They can be used for Christmas displays, but short UK winter days limit solar charging. A solar-only set may run for less time or may not switch on after a dull day. If you want to top up the battery, choose a model with USB charging and check its product page for instructions.
Warm white or multi-colour — which should I choose?
Warm white gives a softer, more traditional look; multi-colour suits a more colourful display. Check each product for its colour options and lighting effects. Multi-colour does not necessarily mean that you can select individual colours or switch to warm white.
How do you attach them to a fence?
Run the string along the top rail or across the boards and fix it every three or four lights with clips, cable ties or small hooks, so the wire sits straight rather than sagging between fixings. Put the solar panel unit where it gets direct midday sun — on its ground spike in the border below or on its wall bracket — within reach of the lead to the first light (2.5 m on our Sterling set). Keep the panel away from porch and street lights or it will not switch on at dusk.
Are solar string lights any good in the UK?
Yes in spring and summer, when long days give the panel five hours or more of direct sun and a set runs through the evening — our 200 LED Sterling set gives around 10 hours a night after a sunny day. From late autumn the sun is lower and the useful hours fall, so running time drops and a set may not come on after a dull day. If you want lights through winter, choose a hybrid solar and USB set such as the Endurance Deluxe, which you can top up from a phone charger.
