Want Evening Running? Consider the Hybrid Upgrade

The 1260016-G is a direct-solar kit — your fountain runs only when the sun shines. If you'd like your fountain to keep running into the evening or on cloudy days, the SW1020D Solar Battery Hybrid Kit includes an integrated battery that stores energy during the day and releases it when light drops. It fits the same water features and is a drop-in upgrade from this kit.

What This Kit Replaces

Smart Garden has discontinued several older spare parts. The 1260016-G replaces all of the following — if you previously bought any of these, the 1260016-G is the correct updated replacement:

  • 2030PKS-G — Twin Panel & Pump Spare Kit (all fountain-specific variants: Duck Family, Umbrella, Queensbury, Dancing Couple, Tipping Pail, etc.)
  • SP-160XC3 — Spare Pump For Twin Panel Fountains (discontinued)
  • SP-160XC4 — Spare Pump For Twin Panel Fountains (discontinued)

The 1260016-G includes both the panel AND the pump as a matched set, so even if you only need a pump replacement, this kit is the correct order.

Installation Guide: 1260016-G Replacement Kit

Swapping the panel and pump takes about 10 minutes. No tools needed — all connections are push-fit.

Step 1: Remove the Old Panel and Pump

  • Disconnect the old solar panel cable from the pump
  • Lift the old pump out of the water feature reservoir
  • Remove the old solar panel from its ground spike or mounting position
  • Set the old components aside — they cannot be mixed with the new kit

Step 2: Fit the New Pump

  • Place the new pump into the reservoir at the base of your water feature
  • Make sure the pump is fully submerged — it must be under water at all times
  • Position the pump outlet so it feeds into the fountain tube or nozzle
  • Route the pump cable up and out through the same channel the old cable used

Step 3: Connect the New Panel

  • Push the pump cable connector firmly into the panel socket — it's a push-fit connection
  • Insert the ground spike into soft ground in a sunny position
  • Angle the panel south-facing for maximum sun exposure
  • Keep the panel clear of shade — even partial shade significantly reduces output

Step 4: Test

  • In direct sunlight, the pump should start within a few seconds
  • If nothing happens, check the cable connection is fully pushed in
  • Make sure the pump is fully submerged — dry running will damage it
  • Adjust the fountain nozzle or tube height to get the display you want

Maintenance

  • Clean the solar panel monthly — dust and bird droppings reduce output
  • Check the pump filter regularly and rinse off any algae or debris
  • Top up the water level in the reservoir — the pump must always be submerged
  • In winter, bring the pump indoors to prevent frost damage

How the 1260016-G Solar Kit Works

This is a direct-solar system — the twin panel powers the pump directly from sunlight with no battery. Here's how each part works together.

1. Solar Energy Collection

  • The twin solar panel absorbs sunlight and converts it into DC electrical power
  • The dual-panel design provides more surface area than a single panel, giving stronger output in variable UK light
  • Output scales with sunlight — full sun gives maximum flow, light cloud gives reduced flow, heavy cloud or shade stops the pump

2. Direct Power to Pump

  • Power runs through a single cable from the panel directly to the submersible pump — no battery, no controller, no switches
  • The pump starts automatically when the panel generates enough voltage and stops when light drops below the threshold
  • This is the simplest and most reliable solar fountain design — fewer components means fewer things to go wrong

3. Water Circulation

  • The submersible pump sits in the reservoir at the base of your water feature
  • It draws water in through a filter screen and pushes it up through the fountain tube or nozzle
  • Water flows down the feature tiers by gravity, back into the reservoir, and the cycle repeats
  • Flow rate depends on sunlight intensity — you'll see the fountain run stronger on sunny days

4. What This Means in Practice

  • Your fountain runs during daylight hours in direct sunlight — typically from mid-morning to late afternoon in UK summer
  • No running costs — the sun powers everything
  • No wiring, no mains connection, no electrician needed
  • If you want evening running or operation in cloudy weather, consider upgrading to the SW1020D or SW1040D hybrid kit which includes a battery
