A qualified electrician should be used for all mains lights

Here is a set of instructions for electricians installing a 10-watt, mains-powered security light in the UK, following the relevant electrical regulations:

Instructions for Installing a 10-Watt Mains-Powered Security Light

Please read these instructions carefully before attempting the installation. If you are not confident in carrying out electrical work, it is recommended to hire a qualified electrician.

Safety Precautions:

  • Ensure the main power supply is switched off before starting the installation.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses and gloves.
  • Work in a well-lit area and take care to avoid any potential hazards.

Required Tools and Materials:

  • Security light unit
  • Screwdriver set
  • Electrical tape
  • Cable connectors or wire nuts
  • Drill and appropriate drill bits
  • Ladder or step stool (if installing at height)

Installation Steps:

  1. Identify the location for the security light. Ensure it is positioned to provide the desired coverage and is easily accessible for maintenance.

  2. Turn off the main power supply to the area where you will be working.

  3. Remove the security light unit from its packaging and familiarise yourself with the components.

  4. Use the provided mounting template or measure the security light's dimensions to mark the drilling positions on the wall or mounting surface.

  5. Drill the necessary holes and securely fix the mounting bracket or backbox to the wall using appropriate fixings.

  6. Carefully route the mains power cable to the security light's location, ensuring it is secured and protected from damage.

  7. Connect the mains power supply wires to the security light's terminals, following the colour-coding:

    • Brown or red wire to the live (L) terminal
    • Blue or black wire to the neutral (N) terminal
    • Green and yellow wire to the earth (E) terminal
Ensure all connections are secure and properly insulated using electrical tape or cable connectors.
  8. Attach the security light unit to the mounted bracket or backbox, taking care not to trap or damage any wires.

  9. Restore the main power supply and test the security light to ensure it is functioning correctly.

  10. Adjust the light's angle and sensitivity settings as required to achieve the desired coverage and performance.

  11. Secure any excess cables and tidy the installation area.

Remember to consult a qualified electrician if you are unsure about any part of the installation process. Ensure the work complies with the relevant electrical regulations in the UK.

A 10-watt, mains-powered security light typically works as follows:

  1. Power Source: The security light is connected to the mains power supply, usually operating at 230 volts in the UK. The power supply provides the necessary electrical energy for the light to function.

  2. Light Emitting Diode (LED) Technology: The security light often utilizes LED technology, which is highly efficient and provides bright illumination despite the low power consumption. The 10-watt rating indicates the power consumption of the light, with LEDs converting electrical energy into visible light.

  3. Motion Sensor : Many security lights incorporate a motion sensor that detects movement within its range. When motion is detected, the sensor triggers the light to switch on, alerting occupants and potentially deterring intruders.

  4. Weatherproofing: Mains-powered security lights are typically designed to be weatherproof, with robust enclosures and sealing to protect the internal components from environmental factors such as rain, wind, and temperature fluctuations.

  5. Mounting and Adjustability: These lights are often designed for easy installation and may feature adjustable brackets or swivel points to allow precise positioning and coverage adjustment.

  6. Security and Safety: The bright illumination provided by the security light serves as a deterrent to potential intruders, as well as enhancing safety and visibility around the property during nighttime hours.

In summary, a 10-watt, mains powered security light operates by converting electrical energy into visible light, and incorporates additional features such as motion sensors to enhance functionality and energy efficiency.

After installation, can be adjusted for Time, Lux and Sensitivity using the dials on the back of the PIR.

SENS - Adjust the sensor's sensitivity to Motion Detection distance: 1 ~ 6m (adjustable) the best effect of 6 meters (26 degrees), Detection range: 180° twist able up and down, left and right.

TIME - Set the light duration time, from 3 Seconds to 7 Minutes. When the small dot spins round to the maximal position, the light will stay on for the longest time (360 seconds) ; Opposite shortest time(6 seconds).

LUX - When the small dot spins to the maximal position (the sun), the sensor will work even in the daytime; when to the minimal position (the moon), it will only work when it is completely dark.

Led's are far more efficient than halogen, they convert the voltage in to light more easily making them up to 80% more efficient than standard halogen, thus saving a huge amount of money for an equivalent light
