How to Identify Which Connector You Have

DC Barrel

  • Small round metal pin inside a cylinder
  • Same connector as many phone chargers and LED strip lights
  • Pushes in and pulls out — no twist or click

2 Pin

  • Two flat pins inside a round waterproof housing
  • Twists to lock — you'll feel a click when connected
  • Thicker cable than the DC barrel version

2 Pin Heavy Duty

  • Same 2-pin design but larger diameter connector
  • Noticeably thicker cable — rated for higher current
  • Only used on 70W+ pump systems

When Do You Need an Extension Cable?

  • Your solar panel is in shade but there's full sun a few metres away
  • Your water feature is under a tree or pergola but the nearest sunny spot is across the garden
  • You've moved your water feature further from where it was originally set up
  • You want the panel on a south-facing wall but the feature is on the patio
  • Your existing cable barely reaches and is pulled taut — an extension takes the strain off the connections

Why Buy From PowerBee

How to Install Your Extension Cable

No tools needed. The cable simply plugs in between your existing solar panel cable and your pump cable.

Step 1: Disconnect the Panel from the Pump

  • Unplug the existing cable connection between your solar panel and your pump
  • For DC barrel: pull the connector straight out
  • For 2-pin: twist anti-clockwise to unlock, then pull apart

Step 2: Connect the Extension Cable

  • Plug one end of the extension cable into the solar panel's output cable
  • Plug the other end into the pump's input cable
  • The cable is not directional — either end works for either connection
  • For 2-pin connectors, push together and twist clockwise until you feel a click

Step 3: Route and Test

  • Lay the cable along the ground, tucked against borders or under gravel to keep it tidy
  • Avoid running it across areas where it could be tripped over or mowed
  • In direct sunlight, your pump should start running immediately
  • If it doesn't, check both connections are fully pushed in / clicked

Tips

  • You can use two extension cables in series for extra reach (e.g., 2 × 5m = 10m) — but longer cables may slightly reduce pump performance
  • Keep connectors off the ground if possible to prevent water pooling around the join
  • Do not cut or splice the cable — this voids the waterproof seal

How Extension Cables Work with Solar Pumps

Your solar panel generates DC power and sends it to the pump through a cable. The extension cable simply adds length to that cable — it doesn't change the voltage or current, it just lets you put more distance between the panel and the pump.

Why Different Connector Types?

  • Small pumps (SE 360/450/500) draw less than 1 amp — a thin DC barrel connector is sufficient
  • Mid-range pumps (SE 1000/2000/3500) draw up to 2.5 amps — they need a thicker 2-pin waterproof connector to handle the current safely
  • Large pumps (SP70/SP80/SPL100) draw up to 5 amps — they need heavy-duty 2-pin connectors rated for high current
  • Using the wrong connector type won't physically fit — the connectors are different sizes, so you can't accidentally use the wrong one

Does Cable Length Affect Performance?

  • A 3m or 5m extension has negligible effect on pump performance — the voltage drop over that length is minimal
  • If you chain multiple extensions together (e.g., 10m+), you may notice slightly reduced flow in lower light conditions
  • For runs over 10m total, contact us for advice — you may need a higher-rated cable
