Both modes keep a light on all night (Mode 1 stays dim and goes to full brightness when someone moves; Mode 2 stays at full brightness), so they need a good day's charge. They will still work in early spring and late autumn if the panel faces directly south and is completely out of shade, ideally on Mode 1, which uses less charge. In midwinter expect little from them unless they face directly south with no shade at all, and even then they run for less time, especially after dull days.
Position the lights on a wall or fence and allow the solar panel to charge in sunlight so the pair is ready to run after dark without external power.
