What's the difference between solar fairy lights and solar string lights?
The terms are used interchangeably — both describe strings of small LEDs on a flexible cable, solar-powered and designed for outdoor decorative use. Fairy lights tends to emphasise delicate, closely-spaced LEDs often on fine copper wire, suited to a subtle magical look. String lights is the broader term that can include larger-bulb festoon styles. For classic Pinterest-style garden ambience, choose finer fairy strings. For party and patio statement lighting, solar festoon lights are the right call.
Will they work for Christmas displays?
They work well for Christmas with two considerations. Nov-Dec has the shortest UK daylight, so charge times are longer and runtime is typically 4-6 hours per night. Panel placement matters most — south-facing, clear of leaves or snow, away from shade. Warm white or multi-colour — which should I choose?
Warm white (around 3000K) suits classic garden atmospheres, pergolas, weddings, and year-round ambience. It's the default choice for most outdoor decorative use. Multi-colour strings switch between single-colour modes (red, green, blue, purple) and often include effect modes like fade, flash, or twinkle — better for Christmas and festive occasions. Many PowerBee strings offer both via a remote or button, giving flexibility without needing two sets.
How do you attach solar string lights to a fence?
Run the string along the top rail or across the boards and fix it every three or four lights with clips, cable ties or small hooks, so the wire sits straight rather than sagging between fixings. Put the solar panel unit where it gets direct midday sun — on its ground spike in the border below or on its wall bracket — within reach of the lead to the first light (2.5 m on our Sterling set). Keep the panel away from porch and street lights or it will not switch on at dusk.
Are solar string lights any good in the UK?
Yes in spring and summer, when long days give the panel five hours or more of direct sun and a set runs through the evening — our 200 LED Sterling set gives around 10 hours a night after a sunny day. From late autumn the sun is lower and the useful hours fall, so running time drops and a set may not come on after a dull day.
